Frequently asked questions

What Is an LED Driver?

An LED driver converts mains electricity (230V / 110V) into the correct low-voltage power needed to operate compatible LED tape and LED strip lights safely and reliably.

What LED Driver Do I Need for LED Strip Lights?

Choose a driver that matches the voltage of your LED tape and can supply more than your total wattage requirement. Always allow extra capacity on the driver - use 80% of its rated size, leaving 20% headroom.

What Is the Difference Between a Standard and Dimmable LED Driver?

A standard LED driver is designed for simple on/off operation OR to be paired with a low-voltage dimming controller & remote. A dimmable LED driver allows our  LED lighting to be powered and brightness adjusted using a suitable dimming system, such as TRIAC or 0-10V.

How Do I Calculate the Wattage Needed for an LED Driver?

Multiply the wattage per metre of your LED tape by the total number of metres being installed. Choose a compatible driver with a rated capacity above the resulting total wattage.

Can LED Drivers Be Used Outdoors?

Our LED drivers can be used in outdoor or demanding environments; they are IP67 rated. Please consider the installation method and ensure the connections are suitably protected too. Not all LED drivers are made to the same specification; always check the individual product specification and intended installation location.

Can One LED Driver Power Multiple LED Tape Runs?

Yes, provided the LED tape runs use the same compatible voltage and their combined wattage remains within the driver’s rated capacity. The overall installation and cable layout must also be correctly designed.

Do I Need a Dimmable LED Driver?

In most ORKO LED Lighting projects we recommend the use of a low voltage dimming controller and wireless remote, negating the need for a dimmable driver.

Choose a dimmable LED driver when you want to adjust the brightness of ORKO LED lighting through a mains dimming system, or systems such as TRIAC or 0-10V. For installations requiring only on/off control, a standard driver is generally sufficient.

Can I Use Any Driver with ORKO LED Tape?

The driver must match the voltage and power requirements of the ORKO LED tape being installed. If you’re unsure which combination you need, use the LED Flex Extreme Kit Builder or contact ORKO’s lighting specialists for guidance.
